40th Artillery Crest in Stained Glass by: Peter Darling Mike Leyba, Bill Morris, Richard Allen and Rolando Guillermo in Spain. All for One!
1989, deep in the heart of the American Military Zone in West Germany, the Main River town of Hanau served as home base for a technologically cutting-edge unit of American soldiers. It was within this unit that a secret operation began to take shape. The mission, dubbed Operation 'Run Wild,' was led by the then Commander of 'A' 40th Field Artillery MLRS, CPT Thomas Harris. CPT Harris was supported in this operation by his second in command, Executive Officer 1LT Robert Straiton. Operation 'Run Wild' began early one morning along the fog shrouded, sheer cliffs and pebble-sand beaches of the Mediterranean coast of Spain. This particular area, often referred to as the Costa Brava, in the northeastern state of Catalonia, was completely over-run in a surprise, dawn attack by the valiant soldiers of 'A' Battery 40th Field Artillery, MLRS. The streets, bars, discos and civilians at the epicenter of Lloret de Calella, in the heart of Costa Brava, never had a chance! Attempts to resist, or to even protect their fair maidens, were futile against the orchestrated chaos of A/40th's courageous landing on their paradise like beaches. Official records of this operation have been hidden from public knowledge and its very existence denied by all, except those with the highest of security clearances. Today, more than 20 years after Operation 'Run Wild,' Lloret de Calella, Spain has yet to recover from this devastating display of American Soldiers run amuck and without restraint.
