September 16, 1987: Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 40th Field Artillery, reorganized and redesignated as Battery A, 40th Field Artillery (A/40th) and remained assigned to the 3d Armored Division.

*Remainder of battalion reorganized as 2nd Battalion 20th Field Artillery.

January 15, 1992: Battery A, 40th Field Artillery (A/40th) inactivated in Germany and relieved from assignment to the 3d Armored Division.

January 15, 1996: Redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 40th Field Artillery, and assigned to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command; Headquarters concurrently activated at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
July 5, 1918: Constituted in the National Army as Battery A, 40th Field Artillery, an element of the 14th Division.

August 10, 1918: Organized at Camp Custer, Michigan.

February 6, 1919: Deactivated at Camp Custer, Michigan.

October 1, 1933: Reconstituted in the Regular Army as Battery A, 40th Field Artillery (A/40th).

June 4, 1941: Activated at Camp Roberts, California.

March 1, 1943: Reorganized and redesignated; Headquarters and Headquarters Battery 40th FA renamed, HQ 40th Field Artillery Group. Organic assets reorganized as the 974th and 975th Armored Field Artillery Battalions.

January 10, 1946: Inactivated at Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia.

February 5, 1947: Redesignated as Battery A, 509th Field Artillery Battalion.

June 25, 1948: Redesignated as Battery A, 509th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, an element of the 3d Armored Division.

July 30, 1948: Activated at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

October 1, 1957: Inactivated in Germany and relieved from assignment to the 3d Armored Division.

June 2, 1958: Redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Missile Battalion, 40th Artillery.

June 25, 1958: Battalion activated at Fort Bliss, Texas.

April 24, 1963 Inactivated at Fort Bliss, Texas.

January 6, 1966: Redesignated the 1st Howitzer Battalion, 40th Field Artillery.

February 21, 1966: Activated at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

August 15, 1966: Redesignated the 1st Battalion, 40th Field Artillery.

November 20, 1969: Inactivated at Fort Lewis, Washington.

September 1, 1971: Redesignated the 1st Battalion, 40th Field Artillery.
