Once the cease-fire was declared, time crept by in the blistering desert sands of northern Kuwait and southern Iraq. At some point, A/40th sent a detachment of soldiers back to Francois Kaserne, our base in Germany, to prepare for our eventual re-deployment: When that would be, no one knew. Rumors flew faster than our MLRS rockets had rained down steel on the Republican Guard. When would 3rd Armored Division leave to go back to Germany? Any 3AD Task Force left behind to guard the Kuwaiti DMZ would include A/40th, due to our massive MLRS firepower. Would we wait till the 11th ACR could deploy from Germany? Will we stay till all 55,000 Iraqi prisoners were repatriated from Safwan? There were so many possibilities and variables, trying to predict the future was an exercise in futility, mixed with some very creative rationalization. Finally, out of nowhere, came orders for A/40th to prepare to go home. Within days, we withdrew to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, cleaned and prepared our equipment for storage and spent three glorious days with air-conditioning, cold drinks and showers at the infamous Khobar Towers. All we needed now was a flight home. AS FAST AS WE CAME, WE WERE GONE...
