Hanau, Germany - Home Away From Home!

Situated along the Main River, less than 20 kilometers from Frankfurt, sits Hanau, Germany: An industrial and military jewel in the heart of Hessen. The first time I heard the name Hanau was in 1988. Four weeks before graduation from Army Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Sill, OK, the Drill Sergeant told me my assignment orders had come in and they were for Hanau, Germany. The only description he gave was that Hanau was a large, U.S. Army, Military Community in West Germany. I arrived in Hanau on December 15, 1988. At the time, there were upwards of 25,000 American soldiers and personnel in the Hanau Community. At that time, I would have never believed that Hanau would be my home, as a soldier and civilian, for the next 10 years of my life. Hanau is famous for a number of reasons, but primarily for being the birthplace and home of the Grimm Brothers, authors of Grimm's Fairytales. Hanau also has a long history of gold and silver making that dates back to 1303, when Hanau was officially chartered as a city. Hanau's industrial history and capacity was most certainly a factor in the WWII Allies decision to bomb the city on March 13, 1945. Since the end of WWII, Hanau has been the 'home away from home' for hundreds of thousands American soldiers, civilians and family members.
