Francois Kaserne
Francois Kaserne, one of four Kasernes positioned along the infamous stretch of road named Lamboy Strasse, was first established in 1894. Francois was built to house the 6th Thüringen Ulanen (Horse Calvary.) Francois Kaserne, along with Hutier, Hessen-Homburg and Yorkoff, were constructed on the site of an ancient battlefield that witnessed Germany's last defeat at the hands of the mighty Napoleon Bonaparte. Following WWII, Ulanen Kaserne served as a refugee camp for people displaced by the war until the United States Military commandeered it for its own logistical needs.
Francois Kaserne saw her glory days in the late 1980's & early 90's as the Berlin Wall fell and Germany was again reunited. For more than a century, Francois Kaserne served as the foundation for the surrounding communities. Thousands of soldiers, from Horse Calvary to Rocket Artillery, as well as refugees from war-torn nations, felt safe and protected behind its iron and stone walls. Although Francois Kaserne was a little less glamorous with its tumbled, red, brick façade and a bit smaller in size than other Kasernes, Francois was home. Heartily we defended her 'virtue' on Lamboy Strasse and in the eyes of other soldiers. Francois Kaserne was OUR home... at least for a while.
It is both confusing and heart-breaking to look upon Francois Kaserne, the place where I, and countless other soldiers, completed our transformation from youth to men. It's strategic history and nobility stripped away and replaced by gardens, water fountains and play grounds teeming with children who have never known Francois Kaserne as anything but, a place of enjoyment and modern neighborhoods. Perhaps it is ironically fitting, that Francois Kaserne, which absorbed decades of grinding steel, vociferous battalions and pounding boots, finally be set free and allowed to rest.
