The battlefield situation became absolutely clear to Iraqi leaders after learning their vaunted Republican Guard Forces had been liquidated in a few short, but ferocious hours of ground combat with the United States VII Corps. Now, with U.S. Marines and Allied Forces rapidly approaching from the south and the heavy tank divisions of the United States and Great Britain rolling over Iraqi forces in the open desert, Saddam Hussein ordered his military to 'withdraw:’ As if they had any other option! In the rush to escape advancing Allied Forces, Iraqi soldiers stole every possible vehicle, loaded them with pillaged Kuwaiti property and began to speed north on a single highway leading from Kuwait City to Basra, in southern Iraq. When the eventual bottleneck ensued, U.S. and Allied forces wiped them from the face of the Earth like a blinding, desert ‘Shamal’: A Desert Storm!
