at the years we lived in the barracks, everything becomes very clear:Our friends at home, who went straight to college, they are the ones who missed a grand experience. We trained hard and we lived even harder! Despite our crazy way of life, we stayed in excellent physical shape: How else can you smoke cigarettes by the carton, drink beer by the case and still run two miles in under 13 or 14 minutes? A two year tour in the barracks was BETTER than college!

Life in the A/40th barracks on Francois Kaserne in Hanau, Germany was an unbelievably crazy place to live. Barracks life had to be the closest alternative to living in a raucous fraternity house at a large university back in the United States. Most of the younger soldiers, who enlisted in the Army instead of going to college, or to earn money for college, didn’t miss a beat compared to what our friends back home were doing at their own universities. Of course, the main difference being that we got to play with weapons and blow up stuff.
The barracks mainly housed the younger or single soldiers in A/40th. Within the barracks walls we lived, relaxed, slept, cleaned, partied, fought with each other and drank enough beer and liquor to fill swimming pools by the dozens! Every room had at least one stereo, TV and a refrigerator to keep the refreshments cool at all times. We were young, single soldiers living in the heart of Europe. Our pockets were full of money with no bills to pay and we certainly didn't have homework assignments or exams. Looking back

There was no shortage of beer, but like many soldiers before me, I tried my best to cause one!
